History

The Bacchic brotherhood was founded in 1953 by René Sotty esq. notary of Chablis, for the 5th Exposition/Tasting of Wine of Yonne. In doing so, he completed the work begun 15 years earlier by Regain, a group of singers and dancers.
The main idea was to provide the Chablis wine region with spiritual and cultural propaganda for local, national and international festivities. Their intent was to reward those who vigorously upheld the qualities and value of Chablis wines.
The brotherhood’s Directory was armed with benevolence, solidarity and dedication; yet a name was needed.

Why the name Pillars? René Sotty was overwhelmed by the crypt “Gros Piliers” at Mont Saint Michel. The Gros Piliers are the foundation of a fantastic edifice. The pillars, each 5 meters in width, bear the weight of the entire Abbey, and, in a broader sense, of this marvel. Chablis wines were the marvel which needed support. Hence…
Today, the Capital (chapiteau) is composed of winegrowers and wine makers who carry on the founding members’ brotherly values. There are chapters throughout France, Europe and the world.

Respect and conviviality are the leitmotifs of the program that is composed of 4 Acts :

Promote Chablis
Promote the Region
Promote the incomparable vineyard
Promote these wines oft’ copied yet never equaled.
