The Mandement

Incidentally, and in order to be historically precise, it is proper to take into consideration the quantity of wine absorbed by the members of the clergy over the years since various religious congregations used to hold the more important parcels of the Chablis vineyard (contrary to popular belief, however, during the lifetime of Bishop Mayence the clergy only held about 10% of the vineyard and not especially in the better areas).

de l'Archevêque de Mayence (1543)

« May he who … at the third or fourth glass … feels his mind clouding over so that he no longer recognizes … his Wife … his Children … his Friends … limit himself to two glasses if he does not wish to offend God and be scorned by his neighbour.
But may he who, after drinking … four, five or six glasses … is still able to work and to assist his neighbour, if need be, may he, absorb humbly and with gratitude, the quantity that God has granted him the capacity to consume.
May he be wary, however, … of exceeding these six glasses … for it is rare … that the infinite goodness of the Lord … grants to one of his children … the favour that he has had the grace to bestow on me … his unworthy servant.
My brothers, may your bodies be strengthened and may your spirits rejoice … with the quantity of wine that Our Lord’s divine virtue has seen fit to allow you to absorb.
And in accordance with tradition, we have nothing to add to this worthy counsel, save FOR EACH AND EVERYONE OF US

AMEN ! »
